Family Activities

There is no shortage of fun activities to keep the whole family entertained during your visit to Edinburgh. As well as the historical attractions the city has to offer, these fantastic days out will inspire the child inside every one of us.

Edinburgh Zoo

Home to the UK's only giant pandas and koalas, Edinburgh Zoo houses over 1,000 rare and beautiful animals from all around the world. Visit the new Meerkat plaza, state-of-art chimpanzee enclosure, or waddle with the penguins in the world famous Penguin Parade. Alternatively, you can experience the zoo from above with a free scenic hilltop safari tour around the park, which not only gives superb views of the animals but also outstanding views of the city. The zoo is open 365 days a year - even on Christmas Day!

Our Dynamic Earth

Dynamic Earth is a 5 star visitor experience which invites you to take a journey through time to witness the story of planet Earth. Through a series of interactive exhibits, state of the art technology and even a 4D encounter you will feel the heat of a bubbling volcano, face the chill of polar ice, fly across the globe before crash landing in a tropical rainforest. As if this wasn't enough, Dynamic Earth is home to Scotland's only 360 degree full dome film theatre. We have a variety of films showing throughout the year.

Camera Obscura

This Aladdin's cave is filled with illusions, tricks, puzzles, hands-on experiences and unbelievable effects to experience and interact with. Don't miss the two exciting new exhibition spaces Bewilderworld and The Puzzling Zone - Will you find your way out of the magical mirror maze? Can you shrink yourself like Alice in Wonderland in the amazing Ames room? Will you manage to stay on your feet in the Vortex Tunnel? There's only one way to find out. Children can learn and explore, while adults will also love the exhibits and the wonderful views of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Dungeons

Take this 80 minute journey through Scotland's darkest history if you dare... The Edinburgh Dungeon brings together an amazing cast of theatrical actors, special effects, stages, scenes and rides in a truly unique and exciting walkthrough experience that you can literally see, hear, touch, smell and feel. It's hilarious fun... and it's sometimes a bit scary. You will laugh and scream as you encounter gripping storytelling, exciting rides and thrilling special effects. It's based on real history and legend (minus the boring bits) where you come face-to-face with sinister characters from Scotland's gruesome past, including murderous twosome Burke and Hare and Scottish legend Sawney Bean. Experience the disastrous effects of the plague in Street of Sorrows, the fearsome torture chamber and sense the ghostly presence of the Green Lady in 1715 Old Craig House.

Museum of Childhood

This fun and quirky museum is a fun day out for all the family. Young people can step back in time to learn about the children of the past with a fantastic range of toys and games, while adults can enjoy a trip down memory lane.
